Black pearls have grown in popularity to become the most popular choice of freshwater pearl buyers. They are considered to be one of the rarest cultured pearls in the world. For the Chinese they are symbole of wisdom & strength whereas for the Polynesians they represent eternal love & heavenly blessings. For Sri Lankans they symbolise the the uniqueness & rarity of an individual.
They exist in a number of shapes and hues, with prefernce being fairly evenly split between very black & peacock, aptly named for the colours they present- crimson, blue, green, rust....
Shell Pearls
Shell pearls are NOT plastic. Yes, they are man made but the process of producing them yields a pearl that will keep its shine & colour, will not be affected by sweat or perfume & is more durable than cultured or freshwater pearls. They are then shaped, dyed & coated with natural pear nacre & a pretective coating to give them their lustre.
Shell Pearls are more affordable than freshwater, saltwater or cultured pearls & are available in larger sizes, up to 16mm.
